A Day in Uvita

Uvita has many fun things to do. When we want a low key day out, we hit the Uvita Waterfall which is a quick 5-minute ride away. Then we like to get a bite to eat at the Wine Bar down the road, and if we are feeling up for a little more adventure, we like to head up the mountain for drinks, dinner, and a spectacular ocean view sunset.

Stop 1: Catarata Uvita Waterfall and Butterfly Garden

After a relaxing breakfast at home we like to head to the Uvita waterfall to start our day. It is only 5 minutes drive from the home. The waterfall is perfect for all ages. A pathway from the entrance provides a short walk on flat ground through the Jungle to the falls. There are easy to access swimming holes and a jump platform. A little further up is the waterfall which can be seen from the pools below. For those looking for a little adventure, climb the latter to the top of the waterfall and slide down the fall into the pool below. Before you leave, stop by the butterfly garden at the entrance. They have several varieties of butterflies in a special enclosure. Blue Morpho butterflies float by all around you.

Good to Know: â€‹

  • There is free parking at the entrance to the waterfall facility.

  • The entry price is $4 per person.

  • They have bathrooms at the entrance.

  • If you slide down the waterfall make sure you scoot on your butt to get in place (don't walk as it is slippery). Once in place, cross your arms over your chest, tuck your head in so your chin touches your chest, lean back and slide.

  • We like to bring in a couple of beers or soda in our backpack to have while we are at the falls. Please be respectful, discrete, and always keep your trash to trow away when you leave at the entrance.

Stop 2: Mosaic Wine Bar and Whale Tail Brewery

After the falls, we like to head to Mosaic Wine Bar. It is right down the street from the waterfall. This is a modern bar and restaurant owned by a couple of neighbors to our home. They serve great food including Sushi,  salads, paninis, and our go-to, charcuterie boards. They also make some nice cocktails and have good beers too. Right down the road from them is the Whale Tail Brewery who have good Tacos and craft beers in a lovely Jungle patio.

Stop 3: Mountain View Bar and Sunset Dinner

After lunch, we like to head home, let our stomachs settle and recharge in the pool before heading to this next stop. Around 3:30pm we like to head out to Bar Jolly Roger Escalares. This bar and restaurant is up a steep mountain road that takes you up to a cooler elevation with a spectacular view of the ocean over the mountain side. The bar is open air and on beautiful grounds. They are known for Burgers and Wings and the full bar is home to many expats who call this their "Cheers". Grab a table or bar stool and enjoy some libations. Then stay for the sunset over the ocean. It is spectacular from this view. NOTE: They are cash only (Dollars  or Colones) so grab some at the ATM on the way.

If you are looking for a nicer dinner than burgers and wings, I recommend getting a reservation at Scala. It is on the same road Bar Jolly Roger is on, and you pass it on your way up the mountain. You can still head to Bar Jolly Roger for a drink but head here for an upscale dinner with a view. You will need a reservation but the food is not to be missed. So tasty.
