Location
Uvita de Osa is a small town in southern Costa Rica, on a section of coastline known as the Costa Ballena of the Pacific Ocean. It's part of the Marino Ballena National Park (Whale Marine Park), named for humpback whales who meet and mate here every winter and spring. Uvita is a great way to explore all of what Costa Rica has to offer including pristine uncrowded beaches, waterfalls, wildlife, excursions, and great food and drink options.
The Uvita vibe is relaxed and less tourism than the north neighbor, Manuel Antonio. It is easy to get around and has amenities that you wont find in every town in Costa Rica. You will find nice restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacy, urgent care, and plenty of homegrown excursion businesses ready to take you on the excursion of your dreams. You will bump elbows with locals and expats alike on your trip.
How to get to the home
From San Jose International Airport you have a few options.
By Car - 3.5 Hours
You can rent a car before arriving from many of the car rental companies in the areas. They will pick you up in their shuttle from the airport, and take you to their office near by. From there you will head down a fully paved highway down the mountain and along the coast to Uvita. You will need a credit card, dollars, or colones to use for the Tolls. Also, please note that the rental car company will add a required insurance to your daily rate, so expect it to be higher price that what your daily rate for the car is. Allamo and Economy are good rental companies.
By Domestic Flight - 30 minute flight and 45 minute drive.
You can take a domestic flight to the Quepos airport that reduces the time to get to the home and the time to get back to San Jose Airport on the way home. The domestic airport is right next to the San Jose Airport and has many flights during the day. You will want to ensure you have 2:45 to 3 hours in between when your international flight lands and when you domestic flight leaves. This gives time to get through immigration, customs, and the short walk to the domestic airport in time to check in the required 45 minutes before the flight. You can use Sansa or Green Airways to book a domestic flight to Quepos on their websites. Once in Quepos you will have a 45 minute drive to the home. We recommend reserving a rental car with Allamo or Economy of Quepos/Manual Antonio. If you ask them to, they will have the car at the Quepos airport when you land so you can quickly head to the home. On the way home you can drop the car off at the airport and they will meet you to pick it up.
By Bus - 4.5 hours
We have not traveled by bus before but it is an option. There are buses that go direct from the airport to Uvita. It's recommended that you have a car in Uvita for your stay if you want to explore and make the most of your trip, hence why we usually take the By Car or By Domestic Flight options above.
