Playa Colonia

A relaxing day at the beach is just what you need after a day of travel. Playa Colonia is 600 meters or 1/3 mile from the house and a short walk or ride to the beach! Playa Colonia is a protected beach and part of the national park, Marino Ballena. It is most famous for its natural beauty unspoiled by condos and beach vendors. All you will see here are locals, ex-pats, and tourist strolling the beach, basking in hammocks under the palms, and playing in the waves. From the house, take a right on the paved road.

Things to do:

  • Surf! This beach is know for great surfing. The waves are long, consistent, and not too strong which is perfect for beginners and established surfers alike. You will often see short and longboards here. For great surf lessons contact Rama Surf : https://ramasurf.com/

  • Walk to the famous Whale Tail. The Whale Tail needs to be seen at low-tide when it's exposed. This walk is 1/4 mile from the entrance to the beach. You can also reach it by driving to the main national park entrance.

  • Epic sunsets occur around 5pm each night. It is well worth spending at least one evening under the bright colors of the sunset over the national park.

  • Swimming is ideal for families and children due to the long gradual decline of the beach and the calmer surf.

 Good to know:

  • Park is open from 7am to 6pm. Every day of the week.

  • Entrance fee to the national park is $6 per person and goes to the lifeguards, restrooms, showers, preservation, security, and cleaning of the national park.
